Building a Legacy: More About The Sheffield Foundation for Historic Preservation

The Sheffield Foundation for Historic Preservation is committed to anchoring our city's future prosperity in the strength of its past. While our ultimate vision includes a flagship museum project to serve as the central hub for local tourism, education, and civic pride (Phase I), we are simultaneously launching several high-impact initiatives that are vital to our community's success.

We invite you—our residents, businesses, and philanthropic leaders—to join us in this critical mission to transform Sheffield's history into its most valuable asset.

Core Initiatives: Impacting Sheffield Now and Tomorrow

I. Community Engagement & Legacy Programs (Prevention)

These programs are designed to activate community involvement, drive education, and cultivate the local pride that fuels tourism and investment.

II. Preservation & Economic Restoration (Rescue & Restoration)

We believe that a rescued historic structure is not merely preserved—it is an opportunity for economic revitalization and renewed community utility.

1. Rescuing Historic Stories and Structures

We strategically identify structures and stories in danger and create customized rescue programs.

Urgent Example: The pre-Civil War log structure at 2708 10th Avenue is tragically under threat of demolition, awaiting erasure from history. Its rescue requires dedicated focus, a specific plan for its future, and a coalition of committed citizens and businesses. The Foundation is committed to preventing the loss of these invaluable assets one by one.

2. Restoring Historic Properties to Useful Community Service

Once rescued, the property's restoration to useful service becomes the focus. An idle historic property represents a lost opportunity.

●      A Proven Model: The restoration of the former Blake residence (615 Riverbluff Drive) created Ivy Manor Studios. This effort generated jobs, delivered local economic impact, and established Sheffield as a major contributor to the music renaissance, hosting artists like Cody Johnson and Manchester Orchestra.

●      The Future Vision: Every property we rescue has the potential to become a tourist destination, a new local business, a historic landmark, or a cultural signpost. We see a vast, unfathomable treasure chest of opportunity to do good by restoring our deep well of rich historic structures.
